The Patriots have informed LB Markell Carter that he’s been released,
according to multiple reports. The 22-year old defender was
signed to
a future contract in February 2012.
A sixth round pick in 2011
(194th overall), Carter spent last season on the team’s practice
squad. Reportedly earning an increase in pay, Carter chose to
remain
with the club in December rather than sign with another team for a
chance to earn playing time.
According to his twitter account, Carter wished fans well Thursday
morning:
The 6-foot-4, 248-pound Oklahoma native had reportedly been working on
bulking up to play more of the DE/OLB role with the Patriots.
A defensive end in college, Carter recorded 143 tackles and 16.5 sacks
at Central Arkansas.
Carter’s release will create one open spot on the Patriots 90-man
roster.
