Lions Prepared To Sign Alexander, Stubblefield
(ALLEN PARK) - The courtship of free agent tight end Stephen Alexander appears ready to come to fruition today. Detroit is expected to get Alexander's signature on a two-year deal today that would beef up the talent level at the tight end position where former undrafted free agent Casey FitzSimmons is currently the starter. The move could mean the end of the tenure of Mikhael Ricks in Detroit. Alexander, 28, had his best season of his five years in the NFL in 2000 when he caught 47 balls for 510 yards and was named to the Pro Bowl. He fell out of favor with the San Diego Chargers after suffering through another injury plagued year which limited him to just 12 starts. Somewhat surprising is that Detroit is also expected to sign veteran free agent defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield, a 12-year veteran and three time pro bowler, to provide even more depth on the defensive line. Stubblefield's production has been on the decline for the last few years. Last year he appeared in just eight games for the Oakland Raiders and tallied a career low in starts with just six. He had his best years with the San Francisco 49ers. In his rookie season he burst onto the scene with 61 tackles and 10.5 sacks. In 1997, Stubblefield recorded 15 sacks from the tackle position as he became one of the most feared defensive players in the league. This move could mean that Detroit elects not to re-sign free agent Kelvin Pritchett, 34 and instead go with a bigger, perhaps stronger player in Stubblefield in his place. Detroit will line up Shaun Rogers and Dan Wilkinson as the starters. Stubblefield and Wilkinson were teammates in Washington. If Detroit gets both players signatures on contract today expect an official announcement later in the week.
