Countdown to Camp: #99 Ahmad Childress
DL Ahmad Childress 6-6, 351 Alabama Whites Creek, TN[NFL Draft Scouting Report] Quick Bio Mammoth project that left college too early, according to just about every draft guide (some cited academic reasons). Childress is still an inviting prospect, however, and has shown flashes of athleticism under his 351 pound frame. The Scoop Childress was one of Detroit's targets leaving April's combine after the team interviewed with him in Indianapolis. Because he wasn't even the second-best defensive lineman leaving Alabama for the draft, though, he slid through each round before Detroit snagged him in the vast pool of undrafted free-agents. The Lions aren't particularly deep at the defensive tackle position, so Childress is definitely worth keeping an eye on. Key Points Size matters. Childress brings bulk, if nothing else, to the defensive line. His 6-6, 351 pound frame gave enough SEC schools trouble, which says alot. Packaged with athleticism, the potential is blatantly apparent. Minor injuries prevented Childress from having what was touted as being a break-out year as a fourth-year junior at Alabama (he spent his freshman year in J.C.). He was expected to anchor a talented Crimson Tide defensive line last season. BamaMag.com referred to Childress as "an athlete masquerading as a defensive tackle" and based on his size and speed (5.3 40), has "pro potential." Outlook Another one of Matt Millen's "projects." Current starting defensive tackle Shaun Rogers seems to be paying off, and Childress is in a similar mold, only at a much cheaper price. If he doesn't pan out, the Lions don't lose anything. If he can play up to his potential, the big school prospect will stick with Detroit -- and make an impact.
