Kircus arrested for suspicion of DUI
Lions wide receiver David Kircus was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. According to Ottawa Township (near Grand Rapids) officials, Kircus was ticketed for an undisclosed traffic violation and subsequently taken into custody upon an officer discretion. While his blood-alcohol test results were not released, Michigan law states a driver is intoxicated if he registers 0.8 or greater. Officers also have the discretion of administering field sobriety tests and making a judgement call based on the results.
Kircus was already on thin ice in a crowded talent-ladened receiving corps in Detroit but has been outspoken in believing that if he didn't make the Lions roster he would catch on somewhere else in the NFL. That may be dubious think because the third-year former NCAA Division I-AA standout has yet to make an impact in the league on any level.
Lions vice president Bill Keenist issued the following statement. "We are aware of the situation and we have no further comment at this time."
Green named winner of prestigious McCann Award
Detroit News legendary columnist Jerry Green was named winner of the 2005 McCann Award by the Pro Football Writers Association of America and will be honored at the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction dinner in Canton, MI. One of the truly good guys in the profession, Green is one of a handful of journalist who have covered every Super Bowl game and will be honored along with the 2005 inductees including quarterbacks Dan Marion and Steve Young. Congratulations Jerry, you're a class act.
Say it ain't so, no more "Primetime"?
ESPN's "Primetime", a staple of Sunday night viewing will move to a midnight starting time, effectively ending its reign as the NFL's postgame must-see. Now that NBC has grabbed the Sunday night package it will be the destination of choice for fans wanting a quick, but in-depth go round the league. Since ESPN will now take over coverage of Monday Night Football from ABC, they will not be permitted to show highlights until 12:01am Monday morning.
"The change in the showing of highlights is that our extended network highlights show on Sunday is moving from ESPN to NBC," stated NFL vice president of public relations Greg Aiello. "ESPN will run its extended highlights show at midnight."
While Chris Berman will likely reprise his role in the "Fastest Three Minutes" segment on the Monday night coverage, "Primetime" in, well, prime time, will be missed. It was "must-see" TV for legions of NFL fans. NBC has some big shoes to fill.
Vegas says 8-8 for Lions
The Las Vegas Hilton has set odds for the upcoming season and places the Lions over and under at 8 wins. Lions fans believe the additions of wide recievers Mike Williams and Kevin Johnson, tight end Marcus Pollard along with the return from injury of linebacker Boss Bailey and receiver Charles Rogers that Detroit hits double-digit wins, but Vegas ain't buying into the hype.
