ALLEN PARK - It's one down and one to go as the Lions work at a fever pitch to try to get their last two remaining players signed prior to the 5:00pm EST reporting deadline for the start of training camp.

Lions second round pick Shaun Cody was en route to Detroit in preparation for an expected signing sometime Thursday. While there is no word whether the Lions and Cody have actually agreed to terms on a contracts, his agent confirmed that he has asked his client to come to Detroit with that expectation. That would indicate that the two sides are close enough that an agreement would be imminent.

Cody's agent, Harold Lewis, believes that the two sides are close enough, that his client will be in on time. "When the deal's done," said Lewis, "I don't want to have to wait another day for him to fly across country."

That would leave just the team's first round pick, Southern California wide receiver Mike Williams for C.O.O. Tom Lewand and assistant general manager Martin Mayhew to sign. With the No. 1 overall pick, Utah quarterback Alex Smith signing with the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week, the parameters of what the next few players drafted behind him will get in their contract offers has been established.

Williams' agent, Mitch Frankel, yesterday flew into Detroit to meet face-to-face with Lions officials hoping to hammer out a deal prior to the 5:00pm deadline. Having been selected 10th, Williams could likely expect something in the neighborhood of an $8-9 million signing bonus on a four or five-year contract.

Lions head coach Steve Mariucci is expected to address the media later today.
