Lions' running back Kevin Jones learned quickly that the trade-off between personal statistics and the won/loss column is typically bittersweet.
Last season's rookie sensation, who led the league in rushing during the second half of the 2004 season en route to a Pro Bowl nod, isn't taking that learning experience with a grain of salt. And, despite the general consensus that forecasts a breakout sophomore campaign, Jones is really only concerned with one statistic.
"I just want to win," responded Jones when pressed on his individual outlook for 2005. "I don't want to lose anymore; we had enough of that last season.
"I just want to win the most games that we can and play in the Super Bowl. That's my main goal."
After battling an injury bug and a dubious coaching decision early in 2004, Jones tallied 906 yards in Detroit's final eight regular season contests. Unfortunately, it only resulted in two wins.
But the personal milestones didn't force the former Virginia Tech Hokie to become complacent.
"I learned a lot from the losses," acknowledged Jones, who put on five pounds of muscle during the off-season. "A lot of things that I could have done better personally as far as blocking, catching the ball, and just knowing where I am supposed to be on the field at certain times to help the offense out.
"Just dealing with myself and trying to be perfect in my assignments is my main thing."
In 2005, the Lions expect Jones to carry the workload on the ground, supported by an abundance of talent at the wide receiver position. With each facet of the Lions' offense working cohesively, the ball club poses a damaging threat to any opponent.
Depth wise, the Lions also seem to be solid. Last year's running back-by-committee, comprised of veteran Shawn Bryson and former fourth-round pick Artose Pinner, is still intact.
"I think we have good depth at the position," said Jones, who is best friends with both of his reserves. "It's not a big drop-off when somebody comes out of the game. I think we're solidified, we're pretty good as a group."
But it is the 'Jones Show' now, and rather than sharing the role, he'll assume complete control of the backfield.
Asked if 1,800 yards was a realistic figure, Jones didn't budge from his stance.
"My goal is to win. So however many yards it takes for us to win is what I want to get."
