Goodman will replace injured cornerback Fernando Bryant, who -- pending further tests -- could miss the remainder of the season with with a dislocated clavicle.
"He is going to start right now opposite Dré (Bly)," Mariucci said, later labeling veteran R.W. McQuarters the team's nickel back. "He is a good football player, he is a veteran, he has been around and he knows what we are doing.
"He is a fast guy, he is a tough guy and he is going to play special teams and right now start at corner.
The good news is that the team has strong depth at the position with McQuarters, second-year player Keith Smith and rookie Stanley Wilson.
Mariucci said Goodman was chosen because of his speed.
The injury to Bryant, meanwhile, is more worrisome. After initial results determined that Bryant could miss several weeks, the injury might be severe enough to keep Bryant out for the remainder of the season. Mariucci remained cautiously optimistic, though, with further tests pending.
"We are going to wait a week and see if his shoulder calms down or not," he said. "He is pretty sore right now, and he is in a sling. He doesn't move his arm at all really. Next week we will see if it is improved at all and see if it is an AC separation or an AC dislocation. It is pretty severe.
"If it is not coming his way, then I suppose surgery is not out of the question, but we are trying to get to the point where we can evaluate it next week and make a better decision."
