Lions Health Concerns Easing A Bit
Following Wednesday's practice, Lions' head coach Steve Mariucci said the quadriceps injury suffered to wide receiver Roy Williams isn't serious, and that Williams is improving every day. Williams was held out of Wednesday's practice as a precautionary measure. Although he is officially listed as "Questionable" on the team's injury report, he'll likely play if his condition continues to improve.
"He feels better than he did," Mariucci said. "Each day he is getting better."
The same news applied to kick return specialist and receiver Eddie Drummond (knee), who was also held out of practice. The Lions believe Drummond can return by the end of the week.
Meanwhile, rookie wide receiver Mike Williams (back) and fellow flanker Scottie Vines (ankle) returned to practice, and both will play on Sunday against Carolina.
Fullback Cory Schlesinger continues to slowly but surely improve. Schlesinger has not played since breaking a fibula during the Lions exhibition opener. There is a possibility he could see his first action of the season on Sunday.
"He was very busy today," said Mariucci. "He was on the scout team. We kept him out of nine-on-seven. (He did) individual work. He is a special teams player moving around. He is getting close.
"It is nice to see him break a sweat out here. I don't know about his status for this week. We will take it day-by-day and see how sore he feels with all this kind of work."
Following practice, the Lions walked veteran cornerback R.W. McQuarters through a few offensive drills at the receiver position. He will serve as an emergency player at the position, but if the Lions' health at the position continues to improve, he'll be an afterthought.
