Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the decision was made two days ago: between Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, and Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh, every one in Detroit's war room was behind Suh.

It was such a consensus that Mayhew compared it to last year's drafting of quarterback Matthew Stafford.

"(It was) exactly the same feeling in the room as we had last year with Stafford," he said. "Everybody is on board; everybody feels great about this player and we have the exact same feel as last year."

Mayhew admitted that the team fielded calls in the days and hours leading up to the draft, but didn't feel anything was worth giving up the chance to select Suh.

According to Lions head coach Jim Schwartz, Suh immediately puts concerns of Detroit's defense at ease.

"He's good against the run, he's good against the pass, he's incredibly productive, he's incredibly consistent, and he has a long track record of success," said Schwartz. "I think that if he had come out last year, I'm fairly certain he would have been the top defensive lineman chosen last year also. He's got outstanding character. He's a guy that will help our run defense and our pass defense. He'll help our corners out because we won't have to blitz as much.

"I couldn't be happier to get a guy like that."

Schwartz didn't rule out the possibility of Suh even playing at defensive end on occasion, something the versatile lineman did while at Nebraska.

When asked of experienced defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham's reaction, Schwartz responded "He's sound asleep right now," adding "Gunther gave Suh the highest grade in our grading system - you can't grade a guy higher."
