The nickname "Lions" was chosen by original owner George A. Richards, a Detroit radio executive who purchased the Portsmouth Spartans and moved the team to Detroit in 1934. “The lion is monarch of the jungle,” a team spokesperson said, “and we hope to be the monarch of the league.”

52_Glenn-Presnell.JPG (10273 bytes)Nearly seventy-one years later, you can still hear the tension in 97-year-old Glenn Presnell's voice as one of the NFL's oldest living players recalls the controversial 3rd down play that helped determine the team that would lay claim to the 1932 NFL title.

The play was a touchdown pass from Chicago Bear fullback Bronko Nagurski to teammate Red Grange that covered only two yards. However, those two yards gave the Chicago Bears all the points they needed in their 9-0 playoff victory over Presnell and his Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans on December 18, 1932.

The "Paper Lion" Was One of a Kind

52_GeorgePlimpton.JPG (12598 bytes)Forty years ago, George Plimpton pulled off what the rest of us have only dreamed about. In the Detroit Lions' 1963 training camp, Plimpton posed as a 36-year old rookie quarterback from Harvard, chronicling his experiences into the best selling book Paper Lion.

George Plimpton passed away this past Thursday, September 25.
