WR Derrick Williams: Firmly Entrenched As Return Man? by Scout.com of RoarReport.com, August 17, 2009 at 10:53am ET
Derrick Williams Profile
The old Lions regime emphasized avoiding penalties in the return game, not gaining yardage. The new regime is more aggressive, and several players are in the mix. "We have quite a few returners now," general manager Martin Mayhew said. "We had hardly any last year, and now we have almost too many." The Lions' brass will be watching rookie wide receiver Derrick Williams especially closely. Williams, who wasn't productive in the punt return game during Saturday's win over Atlanta, returned his one kick-off attempt for a game-high 28 yards. "We drafted him in the third round, and people viewed it as an offensive pick," Mayhew said. "I viewed it as a special teams pick. I think that's the area where he can probably contribute the fastest for us."
